POPSEOUL! Exclusive Interview with Rain: I am Magic Feet
April 28th, 2008 American Dream, K-pop Nonsense, Movie News, POPSEOUL! Exclusive
What a disappointing interview! Despite the time constraint and the request to ask only Speed Racer related questions, I expected better things to come out of Rain’s mouth but I guess I was expecting too much from the Engrish speaking star.
After being told that Rain wants to hold the interview in English, I asked him about his character in the movie and why we should fall in love with him. I expected some in-depth analysis of his character, Taejo, but instead he went on about how he signed on with the movie because he trusted the Wachowski brothers among some other things that weren’t interesting.
Not what I wanted to hear, so I asked again. Rain started to say something about his character being strong, sad and after having a hard time expressing himself in English, he went on to say that Taejo holds the key in the movie in Korean.
During that segment, he said one good coherent line in English. “Whatever you expect, you’ll see more” and that’s probably memorized.
I’m no film expert, but if you spent months filming it - shouldn’t you have more to say? Just a thought.
Then I confirmed that he’ll be appearing on the Colbert show. Based on his English skills or lack thereof, I’m guessing it’ll just be a dance-off.
Just when I wanted to sneak in some juicy questions, such as “did you sleep with Lee Hyori”, “when’s your next hair appointment”, etc, the coordinator jumped on the line to tell us that our time is up.
Before we ended the interview, I asked him which nickname he preferred. Initially Rain wanted to be called the dancing machine instead of Pinky, ESL student and shrimp-eyed star, then he had a eureka moment and said “Magic Feet”. Apparently that’s what Time had called him back in the days.
Talking to the Magic Feet confirmed that his English is no where near where it should be after many years of studying and that he’s pretty clueless about his character Taejo. Nothing new here, but at least I now have a new nickname.
Although Magic Feet failed at selling me Speed Racer, I plan on checking it out, just to see those Magic Feet in action, so watch out for our review when it hits the theaters on May 9th, 2008.
Lastly, we would like to thank Warner Brothers & Rain for participating in this interview.
Check out the eight minutes of interview below.

April 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Audio interview this time! Whoo-hoo. I’m proud of you guys. His answers were not at all in-depth, but I think “whatever I expected, I [heard] more.” xP
April 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
LOLLLLL

WOW you guys must always sound nice to celebs face
but a jerk on popseoul
haha its ok, i like.
rain says “so” really funni lmao
April 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
HAHAHAHA “Magic Feet”. What a douche.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
LOL magic fit. it’s funny how you can totally tell which lines of his are rehearsed, since those are the only ones that he can say without too strong of a struggle.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Considering he’s not been learning english very long, he sounds pretty good to me.
but obviously he’s way more confident in korean.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
well at least he tried…
:T i’m still gonna go see it.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Aww…rain’s sweet. He loves his character!
hahaa.
the interviewer sounds sweet
April 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Wow so much bashing of esl magic feet behind the sweet voice korean voice of pop seoul.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
omg. im in love with popseoul’s sweet voice. you should try out to be a kpop star. =)
but well. our Magic Feet tried his best. hehe.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
Even though he requested it be in English, he needed everything to be was translated in Korean. lame. He really needs to continue his lessons.
“Um.” “Uh” “Well” “You know”
Thanks for the audio. We all, now know how bad Rain’s English truly is.. =\
April 28th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
PopSeoul has such a pretty voice! Rain sounds really nice and humble too, but his english does need some work.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
LMAO kickass kung fu?! that was great. Bi I love you.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
omg again. well i just realized that PopSeoul was pretty starstruck too considering she complemented rain on his dancing “because you’re amazing in dancing”. lol. cute. =)
will popseoul do a translation? i hope so! =)
April 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
he really should study english! hehe..
April 28th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
lol rain is funny.. i think u shouldnt make him look too bad since he actually spend time to let u interview..
April 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
lol. hearing popseoul’s voice reminds me of the elusive gossip girl on the show “gossip girl.” anyways, congrats on securing an interview! haha… i was expecting a little more, but overall, it wasn’t THAT bad. it was funny when you called him “pinky,” “dance machine,” & “shrimp-eyed star.” either he was sort of offended, or he had no idea what the first or third nicknames meant. keke… hopefully, you can interview him again in the future! =)
April 28th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Didn’t he say dancing machine rather than magic feet?
April 28th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Haha aww. I can’t wait till the Stephen Colbert episode tonight!
April 28th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
I think your being alil hard on the guy. He took the time to hold the interview with you and english isnt his first language so i think you should cut the guy some slack.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
popseoul, you have a really nice voice.
and LOL at the nickname question. At first I was like “magic fit?!”.
Rain, you need to work on your English. XD
April 28th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Popseoul’s voice sound EXACTLY like Joo’s voice when she speaks Korean! Weird…
April 28th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Popseoul, I hope your not offended… since many people seem to hate Joo, but I think she’s okay.
Anyways, here a link of Joo speaking, compare it Popseoul’s voice when she speaks and laughs… it sounds exactly the same~!!

April 28th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I would have perfer Magic Fit.
Sidenote:
For the record (I attended the Speed Racer premiere at the Nokia Live), Taejo’s dialogues were very limted i.e. “no” “stop” “what do you mean” “yes” “whoooooo” “where have you been”.
Taejo is a very important role in the plot. So for me, I felt that the writers really didn’t develop his character enough or they did not have confidence in Rain’s english to actually give him meaningful dialogues. Which is a shame as Rain is a pretty good actor.
Overall, Speed Racer is a vividly visually stunning movie.
Oh, and Rain is shirtless for at least 10 minutes.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
I thought it’s an english interview, 80% of the interview was in korean. With that kind of English, I don’t think Rain will succeed in hollywood.
Popseoul, you’ve got a nice voice, I wonder if you’re as beautiful as your voice. Thanks for sharing with us this exclusive interview with Rain.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
wow, what a futile interview .. and totally pointless at that.
he didn’t even understand half the questions you asked and neither did he have anything substantial to say for himself.
그래도 popseoul은 꽤 감동적이다 .. 그리고 겁이 없고.
i can’t believe you guys personally told bi that you refer to him as “shrimp eyes” and “ESL student”! GUTSY~
but after hearing this interview, i’m now afraid of how bi is going to be humiliated by stephen colbert - because he’s like no mercy.
you guys rock though and your korean is so good!
April 28th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Don’t know what to think of it. He sounds sincere and seemed to have tried hard to be nice and to answer the questions but his answers I must say lack substance. It doesn’t mean he is not intelligent (do not personally know the man to say so); it could be that he is nervous about speaking a language foreign to him. One thing sure, he needs to study more. And another - he’s losing his fashion sense, truly. That green tight pants is plain ugly. Sorry, can’t help it. Too obvious.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
he sounds gay!!
good tactics by popseoul for having a recording that actually justifies your bashing…BRAVO!
April 28th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
ooh cotton-candy sweet voice on popseoul!
rain really shouldn’t deceive us with “my english is so rad now, after many months o’ hard work”. lying PR. how exactly did he convince the money-men to land the jobs? bootie shakin’ much??
ROFL…”i think um, shrimped eyed ESL”!!
April 28th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
He’s so talkative when the question is in Korean. He’s obviously not yet THAT confident conversing in English.
MANY years in studying English? As far I know, he hasn’t learned English that much for more than 5 years. So, his English is still acceptable.
To describe you based on the interview and what you wrote here, you are a phony b*tch. You act like all sweet that it’s almost like the sound of fingernails in a chalkboard.
You were granted an interview which is still questionable as to why coz as per PS, this is a blog and not a “news” site. I was expecting too much, thinking that you will spare him this time and actually be nice to him.
But I guess, once a phony ass, always a phony ass.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
HAHAH, Magic feet. That’s cute.
At least he can speak English now.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
^….Even *a bit* of English, I guess..,

You think that “interviewer” could actually bash him face-to-face. I bet that “interviewer” doesn’t have the guts.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
cool interview!
April 28th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
my he definitely has a nice voice.. very sweet and humble..
rain’s just on the phone and popseoul’s starstrucked..
hmmm..
he’s just sweet… good luck rain..
April 28th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Great work, Popseoul! Loved that interview even if I can’t understand Korean. Hahaha.
It was funny when Rain was struggling with his words, but yeah, I agree, at least he can speak English!
Too bad no juicy questions were asked. Tsk, tsk!
April 28th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Since you asked him in Korean, of course, he will answer in Korean. It’s called not-being-rude. Which, by the looks of it, PS is.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
^^… what i meant was that Popseaoul is opposite of not-being-rude.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I feel sorry for Popseoul to have to do the interview with “Magic Feet”. I couldn’t understand what he was saying at first -___-;; And I thought the interview was done in English but I guess I expected too much. Popseoul had to translate every question. sheesh.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Im by no means a Bi fan but this interview-short was very rude and unprofessional and i wonder how you guys even get celebs to do interviews with you.
stuff like this makes me feel embarrased to call myself a korean american.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
popseoul’s english wasn’t bad but not that good to bash other person’s english.. you still have the accent..:) and just when i thought you’re the meanest and all but naah you’re a sweet giggly girl while talking to rain..
fighting RAIN.. i know u can do it coz u’re a hardworking man.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
no longer than five years? five years is many. two years is a couple, three/four are a few but five is many.
i have many korean friends who have only been learning english for maximum two and a half years and they are way more proficient than rain.
it’s obvious rain was not capable of speaking english hence ps speaking in korean to him, she was not rude in that regard
apart from “thank you thank you i love you guys” ive got to say i’m pretty disappointed with rain’s english - he speaks with an american drawl, his english was somewhat lazy i think
April 28th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
You were nice to him during the interview but not so nice wen writing about him on your blog.
Don’t get me wrong I agree w/ what u wrote about Rain and all but shouldn’t your behavior be consistent w/ what you write?
Newais I like your voice wen you speak Korean.
Rain’s English does need a lot of work. You had to switch to Korean a lot during the interview.
I would have been interesting to hear his response to ” Did you sleep with Lee Hyori?”.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
FORGET RAIN, I LOVE YOUR VOICE GIRL! (did she say your name was Eun Ji?)
Well, whatever, big congrats…Popseoul is one of the big boys now! lol
April 28th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
idk, i think rain sounds good enough for a korean.
and you sound really nice XD;
though i still think you shouldnt be too harsh on the celebs D: bashing isnt nice.
April 28th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
duude popseoul you sound SO NICE compared to your tone in articles hahahah i love this site hahhaa do you get paid for doing this stuff??
April 28th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Everything I can say here is that your voice sounds so smooth and.. pretty O_O
As aznduq said, “compared to your tone in articles” LOL
April 28th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
i think you should cut him some slack
not that my english is any good but when people tell you how long they have been studying one language, you must consider the fact that they have a “life” too and they may just be reviewing once in a while.
i don’t think giving a number on how long you have studied a particular language dictates the level to how successful that person may be.
i wish i knew korean then at least i could have understood his answers because his answers were ‘mea’ in english. i also think it’s pretty good that you had the chance to interview him, should probably be thankful of that =p
most of the time i like how u write ur articles regardless of the negative tone. but i think rain deserves more than this…
April 28th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Some notes
* Rain himself didn’t insist on speaking English, it almost sounded like PopSeoul/YunJin(?) wanted it more and he was accommodating her request.
* He asked her if she saw the movie (to which she responded “It didn’t come out yet!”) b/c he assumed she was an official member of the media (who got to see the film) instead of solely a blogger.
* His vocabulary may be lacking but his pronounciation is surprisingly good.
* Though he may have misinterpreted some of the questions, it’s unprofessional to flat out say “You didn’t answer my question.” There are ways to get past that by simply asking other questions.
* There is some diplomacy that goes along with the entertainment industry. Unnecessarily bringing up the derogatory nicknames she uses could burn bridges.
* I thought he showed a lot of patience throughout the interview.
* PopSeoul/YunJin(?) reminds of me my female friends who are either (a) in high school or (b) good at making their voices artificially high to look cute.
* Some of this stuff is mean, but hey, if she gets to say mean stuff about Korean celebrities, then she should be able to take some as well. Her site has gotten so big that at this point, she’s a public figure to some degree as well.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
seriously the only thing i liked about this interview was your voice…this dude is no where near to knowing english…but hey….keep on trying!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
wow..you have such a sweet girly voice.I really enjoyed listening to your FAKE-ness in the interview ^_^
April 28th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
So basically, Popseoul was able to trick Warner Bros and Rain’s handlers into being granted 12 minutes with Rain even if they’re not legitimate press, and PS repays them by still bashing the guy on their site. Way to go Popseoul. *snark*
Popseoul did this not to assist Warner Bros with publicity for the movie (which is probably what they told the company, or else they wouldn’t have landed the gig) but to further humiliate the guy by presenting sufficient ‘evidence’ of his lack of English proficiency. You must be really proud of yourselves, Popseoul. I, on the other hand, have just lost the last iota of respect I have for this blog.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Wow, that was awfully impressive Pop Seoul. I don’t know how you arranged that, but it was tight. Props to ya’ll!
I would have to completely agree with you though… he barely spoke in English, and what he DID say, was limited to say the least. Haha, I liked the “magic fit”… lol.
Personally, pop seoul did an amazing job! You have a lovely voice, so much better and clearer than Rain’s in either language. Great job!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
you definitely have a cute voice..would you be single? haha
April 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I couldn’t have done this interview with Rain, really, because…”you know” lol
You speak both Korean and English so well T_T
I’m struggling in 4급 now but my pronunciation sucks ㅗ
April 28th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Ah!I feel so sorry for the poor boy. Let’s hope that Stephen doesn’t talk to him that much and they just dance. I got embarrassed just listening to him flounder around when trying to answer the questions in English. I think he needs to hit the books more before he tries to tackle any English interviews because he’s an intelligent man, its just that he hasn’t got a good enough grasp of English yet to competently articulate. I’m a huge fan of Rain/Magic Feet and for what he’s doing for the promotion of his country. Let’s hope in the mean time he just speaks Korean until he has a higher grasp of the language so as to not do too much damage to his goal of taking over Hollywood.
And your voice is the cutest! I love your site! I come here everyday for my fix!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
at least magic feet is way better than pinky because it reminds me of happy feet
hahaha
i think the guy could have said so much more about his character than Whatever you expect, you’ll see more if he explained it in korean
urrgghh..why does he keep looking weirder and weirder
April 28th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
It’s very brave of Rain to want to conduct the interview in English. You’ve got to give him that for wanting to try. But after listening to the audio clip, it sounds like the interview was conducted in Korean after all as Rain can articulate much better in Korean. He can’t really express himself well in English.
Yes, i agree with all, the Popseoul! sister who interviewed Rain sounds very sweet!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Haha…stop trying to hit on Popseoul people!
So I don’t get how people just complain and complain their asses off here but STILL come read whatever you write. It’s amazing isn’t it? What a bunch of hypocrites you have as readers hahah.
Keep up the ruthless writing! I looooooove it! Rain doesn’t need “slack,” he needs someone to kick him in the ass so that he knows his US debut needs A LOT OF WORK.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Thank you Popseoul and all the clouds silly stubborn defense. This interview is super entertaining, and I’m sooo looking forward to my dose of Colbert kekeke
I’m not Korean, but I will be super offended IF I’m AND his ‘english’ is considered good for a Korean. So are you fluffy clouds saying Korean can never master English? What is Tablo then?! It’s ineligible, the only line I can understand fully is the ‘u’ll see more’ line. Popseoul had to repeat all questions no matter how simple and Feet was still totally clueless (lost even with mention of his character’s name in Speed…sigh) unless Popseoul reiterate it in Korean. Shame on ESL on having sucha subpar student.
I don’t think P is fake nice though. It’s basic manners and she did flat out tell him those hilarious nicks.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I agree with Frank.
Popseoul, What’s gotten into you?
You are full of yourself. Your article made rain sound like a retard, but I thought the interview was quite appropriate. By no means am I a hardcore fan of rain, but why don’t you support him instead of bashing him? The last question you asked was so inappropriate and RUDE….
I came to the states when I was 7 years old and I still remember to this day struggling with my english as a little girl going to pre school. Of course I’m fluent now having lived here most of my life but it’s not so easy.
What’s wrong with having a Korean accent when speaking in English? He’s from Korea and is learning how to speak the language. Would you rather ALL of Korean stars be second generation to debut in Hollywood who have no Korean roots at all?
I’m not ashamed of my parents, who speak in
English with an accent and cannot express themselves perfectly in English. I think it’s perfectly okay. I want to be an elementary school teacher in the future and am majoring in history at UCLA. Part of the reason is, growing up in LA, I witnessed teachers saying to Asian kids to stop pronouncing words the way they did or telling African American kids that they should pronounce their words the “right” way. It alienates a certain group of people to fit into the “norm”. What is the norm anyway? It’s something that people created to shut out certain groups of people. But there is a historical basis behind the way different ethnic groups talk and there shouldn’t be any “one” way that should be standard.
If you want to play this game, popseoul, your conversational skills are not excellent, considering you are “fluent” in English. Oh, and I could hear an accent in your English as well.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
it annoys me that many koreans can speak english without the necesity of learning it or living in an english-speaking country.
Take sung shi kyung he can speak english and french,,, from self study.
and it bugs me more how CHANGMIN FROM DBSK can speak pretty good english too without TRYING to learn at all.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
wow.. tnx popseoul ahehe. really nice voice.. hehex. really funny interview with rain. XD.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
^^ i meant to say that Rain is dumber than a normal korean
April 28th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
In defense of POPSEOUL!,
the interview was not poorly done. Any regular POPSEOUL! reader should be aware by now that their blog is satirical and opinionated. They can state their thoughts and opinions if they please, regardless if the reader disagrees with it. They are a blog, not a professional news source. I liked the interview and think that more interviews should be a little more provocative with issues and questions. The entertainment world is so superficial and artificial that can often be taken way too seriously by the majority of the population that sometimes we need to step back and laugh at the absurdity of it all. POPSEOUL! conducted the interview in their usual fashion and style, why change just because it’s a high profile celebrity like Rain? Then it would just be like any other interview he’s had… boring. I’m sure he’s never had an interview like this before. Once again, good job girls! I look forward to your interviews with KPop stars in the future.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Nice interview~and I really liked the interviewer’s voice =D
April 28th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
It’s so cool!
Hey, good of the interviewist/journalist to ask him in Korean the things he didn’t understand in English.
But since you say that he spent many years in learning English, I must say it’s going not so good to him, he should work more on the oral comprehension, even tho his accent is not bad at all.
Comment for the journalist of our favourite PopSeoul:
-Great job! You’ve done it greatly and you were very polite and kind too. An A++ for this
p.s From which age does the journalist live in the USA?
April 28th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
one more thing that I just had to say
Just because somebody has an accent does not mean they cannot be fluent in a language. That is incredibly ignorant and I’m sure that she has a better command of english than you do.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Haha. Magic Feet… sounds like some bad nickname from that movie, Happy Feet.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Sakura..
the problem isnt really the interview.. although u can clearly hear rain say that he would rather do the interview in korean because he is more comfortable doing so and then u hear popseoul respond with “okay thats fine”.
the problem lies with the bashing popseoul gives him afterwards in the blog and i cant understand the reason behind it. what did rain do to deserve it? maybe popseoul is some grotesquely overweight and ugly girl who makes herself feel better by talking smack about other ppl? she was being all polite and kind during the interview but then later on the blog writes all this crap about him?
atleast have the balls to say stuff like that during the interview instead of acting all polite. thats why i like jim rome (espn)… he talks alot of crap but does it right to the persons face instead of being all 2 faced.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
To J ,
she get paid for all those dirty comments .Its all for business.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
In defense of myself…
* Thanks for agreeing with me Sarah, but I never said PopSeoul is full of herself.
* Furthermore, I absolutely agree that PopSeoul has every right to say whatever the hell she wants about celebrities and it’s up to us to decide whether or not to read it. In that same sense, I have every right to say whatever the hell I want about PopSeoul (for the reasons stated in my previous comment), and my coming to this site despite not liking everything she says isn’t absurd since she similarly keeps up with celebrity gossip to say largely negative things about them.
* What Sarah said (hey! that’s the name of a song) did bring me to wonder… who reads this site? She mentioned she’s studying history at UCLA. I was wondering what stage of life or occupation other people were at. I’m studying law at Boston College but am originally from CA. Anyone else care to share?
April 28th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
opps..sorry..dirty is not the word.I mean ‘rude and childish’ ^^
April 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
No transcripts of the Korean stuff spoken in the interview?
April 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Nice voice but I’m sorry; you are very fake and it’s honestly kind of irritating.
After listening to this interview (I actually forwarded it to his answers because the interviewer’s voice was getting a little annoying), I find Bi to be very hard-working. Despite his lack in English speaking, you can definitely tell he’s trying. And yeaaah he sounds humble and kind; too be he’s completely ignorant about popseoul’s bias. Hmmm…
April 28th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
So much bashing on Rain… lol Oh well… I still Like him lol So cute! his english is pretty good… I guess not much of an accent for some words… lol It’s cute! I’m gonna go watch Speed Racers anyways
April 28th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Just when I wanted to sneak in some juicy questions, such as “did you sleep with Lee Hyori”, “when’s your next hair appointment”. Sigh, popseoul you always make me LOL. HAHAAHAHA
where you in hong kong to interview him?

someone..
since shes getting paid for it, it makes everything ok. amirite?!?!?!
April 28th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I think she meant that she was told ahead of time that Rain wanted to do the interview in English. But then when they started he told her that he’d rather speak in Korean, which is why they switched. Anyways, good job Popseoul! Even if there are a lot of haters, not a lot of blogs have the opportunity to interview Korea’s most famous stars like Rain.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
popseoul pretty much pressured rain to conduct the interview in english despite rain stating that he would rather speak in korean.
what’s more astonishing is the fact that popseoul states that she is more comfortable with her english than her korean, when really, her english ain’t the best either.
for example and future reference, debut has a silent “t”, the phrase “anything is nervous the first time” is incorrect, and so many more mistakes that it made me want to take out my red pen out and draw circles everywhere
listening to interview, i cannot help but wonder how long it took for popseoul to attain her level of english relative to rain. cause to be honest, i didn’t hear that much difference, rain just had a confidence issue
ps. i hate rain. does he really have to wear green pants?
pps yes i can speak both korean and english quite fluently - absolutely no problems. come back when you’re a real gypo

no longer than five years? five years is many. two years is a couple, three/four are a few but five is many.
i have many korean friends who have only been learning english for maximum two and a half years and they are way more proficient than rain.
—
Uhm.. do you know that he is a celebrity and is working non-stop? I read that he learns English (meaning, studying) only when he has time.
So, of course, unlike the other “ESL” students, he doesn’t have that much time.
And if people still can’t accept that fact, then read this: NOT ALL people has the ability to learn other languages that quick. Maybe this is Rain’s case. It may take him another year to be “good” at it.
I’m not a fan of this guy, but I understand the fact that he is not a full-time student, who actually goes to an English class taking tests or whathaveyou, that’s why his English is still like that.
At least he tries. Props to that.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
wow, popseoul even though i dont like everything you say about k pop, im in love with your voice
April 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
impressive popseoul!!. audio interview ehh.
lved it! rain’s english is kinda eeky but he’s talented.
u’r such a great interviewer- even though i don’t understand korean, u sound so clear n confident. but glad some part is in english.
THANKS!- this is truly an exclusive.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
How long has he been trying to learn english? :\

I’m not Korean, but I will be super offended IF I’m AND his ‘english’ is considered good for a Korean. So are you fluffy clouds saying Korean can never master English? What is Tablo then?!
–
Tablo grew up in Canada (or is it USA?). He majored in English when he was in college. Of course, he will be able to “master” the English language faster.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
magic feet’s english…BAD >.< but he sounds cute…lol
April 28th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I have to add that it is hard to talk on the phone in a language that is not your mother tongue. So, perhaps that is why he couldnt speak so much english.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
J,
lol..since when i say it’s ok ?Right or wrong are just in between a thin line. Popseoul did it merely for the name of $$ ,nothing personal (i hope).Though i believe earning $$ this way is really unethically…
and she must be feeling really happy now waiting for our responses. Each comments may grant her more $$$.Right popseoul? ^^
April 28th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
wah….nice voice you have popseoul!
good interview, too.
just sad that i did not understand some korean words.

I’m telling you, Koreans aren’t offended. Because they’re also studying and they experience the “struggle”. How do I know? Because I have Korean friends who are currently studying English. They actually commend Rain but they’re not at all fans.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
ooh, popseoul! i like your voice! =D
are you going to do a translation for this? i think all the important parts were in Korean…
lol, he really needs to get some english lessons. and ur right, some of the sentences sound too practiced to be natural. and i’m really impressed that you actually called him pinky, ESL student, etc to his face (well, not literally…
thanks for the interview, but do you think they’ll let you do another interview, considering ur article was not adoring and worshippy?? do u think they’ll react like Se7en’s camp did?? that would be so very interesing. =D

one more thing that I just had to say
Just because somebody has an accent does not mean they cannot be fluent in a language.
–
I hear you. But why bash someone with their fluency when you have the accent. Because if you will look at it plainly, it’s the same. Both have “problems”.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Are the writers of POPSEOUL! Korean or…?
Just thought that she has a nice voice, haha.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
hmm, been reading some of the comments.
well, i don’t know, i mean its fair to want to see what level Rain’s english is considering he’s trying to enter the American industry. and honestly, i don’t think PS is any more scathing than she usually is. maybe i’m just used to it… o.O
April 28th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
You both sound better and sweeter in korean than in english
April 28th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
please stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it makes me feel really embarrassing!!!!!!!!!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
wahahahawahahah. did she just say “sence” you want to…?
wahahaha. “anything”is nervous..?
the most annoying part: “which is all funnyyyy…” oh my gosh, so annoying.
Since you like bashing celebrities, I like to bash you.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
yeh i agree his english isnt as good as i had hoped, but i think its hard over the phone, especially in something that’s not your native language, i think body language plays a really big role in understanding what someone’s saying. hmm i think a little work is needed though, iam annoyed at that
April 28th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I will say this Rain needs to work really work on his english I’m sorry but Jackie Chan can speak english better than him. I’m not talking about the accent but understanding the english language. I saw Rain talking in english on Fox news channel 11 in Los Angeles @ 10:OO p.m. They gave him good comments I was surprise that they even mention him but that not the point. The point is when the reporter ask him an question in english Rain answer was off the wall it was like huh? really and he’s suppose to come out with an english album I think not.He would probably make it as an actor than as a singer in the U.S.! Sorry Rain keep tryin!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
i wasn’t too impressed with this interview.
I don’t really like Bi and his english is no where near being good but he’s trying.
for some it takes more than years to get rid of accents. Most of my asian american’s friends parents lived here 10+ years and they still have accents. One exchange student friend of mine was able to get rid of his accent easily while my other friend still has an accent. it differs with each person.
I don’t love your voice like some people do but its nice. You still have an tiny hint of an accent too.
but have you really refered to him as dancing machine before? I don’t remember that.. Or was it you just trying to add something in on purpose? haha just being curious.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
when you told him about ESL student and the shrimp eyed thing, i was almost rolling on the floor…
it was funny, at least he tried…
maybe he was a bit nervous, and that’s why he couldn’t get the english out 0_o i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt
anyway, well done popseoul!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I haven’t clicked on the audio yet to listen to the interview. Seriously, I’m actually cringing at the thought of it. But I totally curious as to whether he can even pronounce “the Wachoski Brothers”!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
HAHAHAHA rain is kinda dumb on his own general info…
Rain: Did you see Speed Racer?
Popseoul: It didint come out remember?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Rain can be dumb at times..
April 28th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
You guys obviously have no idea how hard it is to learn another language. I’ve been learning Korean since January and I should know a ton more words than I do, but I don’t because I’ve been so busy working. And I’m not even an international popstar with a busy schedule, cmon people. He did a good job, and I’m not just saying that because his voice was mesmerizingly sexy. All the haters are really getting old at this point!
April 28th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Definately alot of work needed for Mr. Magic Feet, but I agree that talking over the phone in a foreign language that you haven’t quiet grasped is difficult. Though, I’m not totally convinced that what we heard was his best English.
One only hope his confidence builds to speak English face to face in American interviews (if any).
On another note, on a recent trip to S.Korea I was quiet overwhelmed at how difficult it was to find a someone who spoke English (besides the usual students). Walking into a hair salon with 20 or so girls all aged b/w 20-25 only one could say “I… speak… little.. engrish”. After that experience I do commend Magic Feet in at least trying his best to learn even though there’s a long way to go.
April 28th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
jj..
rain isn’t dumb you’re dumb
he was asking if she saw speed racer coz media people have
this advance screening for them to write about the movie before it is actually shown…
rain is hardworking.. i love his accent.. and his voice so sweet and humble..
unlike popseoul who’s bashing rain’s english she herself can’t speak correctly..
mymy anything is nervous the first time….. what was that.. and you were confident.. huh..
April 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
has anyone noticed that he sounds like borat at 4:06-4:07????lol
April 28th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
poor bi
shoulda done the whole interview in korean
and u do have a nice and friendly voice
haha u korean girls are tricky like that
bi said “kick ass kung fu” :p soooo cute
April 28th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
” English speaking star ” - wittily sarcastic, aren’t u? ; )
I am guessing he probably memorised the answers to why he signed up for the movie ( a predictable question) , not what u asked.
How long’s the clip and how’s his accent? I havent watched it yet
April 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
oh wow, seriously i could not hate you with that sweet voice! DAMN YOU POPSEOUL!! LOL.
poor bi, he’ll probably get better soon though, i mean he has to.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
I was disappointed Rain couldn’t conduct more of the interview in English, but I have to say I don’t know if we can get a good sense of his ability from this interview. I’m currently teaching English in Korea to actual Korean high school students struggling to learn the language, and the questions asked were fairly difficult. “Do you connect with your character” is pretty complex - I doubt that my best speakers (who are very, very good, I should add) would understand the meaning of the word “connect” in that context. He’s learning, his accent is pretty good, and he’ll learn more.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
All you Feet lovers, it’s not the accent that’s the prob with his English, it’s way worse…he cant speak or understand ANYTHING. He didnt say anything cohesive enough to understand at all. To just try to slide it off as him having an accent is saying at least he’s comprehending and speaking the language to a certain extent, which he cant.
Yeah, give him a break all u wanna, but he’s not just any superstar. He wanna break into Hollywood, with acting AND SINGING and I regard it as a disrespect and an ignorant snobbishness in his part to think just his ‘cuteness’/fame/Magic Feet will do the trick. How pathetic.
When bringing up Jackie Chan, we should also mention Zhang ZiYi, who was super lousy and made a huge fool out of herself in many appearances speaking English when she was just breaking into Hollywood. In couple short years, she still has an accent, but she speaks perfectly understandable English. Just to prove accent or not it’s not the thing many ppl is having a prob with, it’s the plain ignorant and inflated big head that Bi has who thinks he’s already somewhat fluent.
I do think Pop has every right to ask for the interview to be in English, afterall it’s Feet’s own egoistic silly self that he can master it to a certain extent and he’s having an ENGLISH Hollywood flick out.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
You have such a sweet voice ^^
I thought Rains english was pretty alright compared to many other koreans.
Go Rain! (Or Magic Feet)
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
wow..your popseoul interviewer voice really sounds nice..and i think rain has done a good job with his english eventhough its not perfect yet..just give him a little time im sure he will get better..^__^
April 28th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I hate the people who are defending rain. He “ONLY” studied for 5 years… ok SERIOUSLY? People who REALLY want to learn can be fluent in less than 2 years. It took me less than a year… and english is my third language. Sheesh!
and i’m REALLY GLAD popseoul did this audio tape, now i know you guys dont BS all the time and step down on stars on purpose… lol everything in this article is so true… except the tone. The tone you write the article is so sarcastic, while in the interview you sound so nice and polite lol.
April 28th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
popseouL, you’re voice is cute!
April 28th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
YOU totally need to get an attitude check. Your articles are biased and mean. Rain and everybody else are working very hard to break into the the American industry, you should be supporting your fellow minorities but all you do is diss diss diss!
Oh and another thing that ticks me off, you always write about how ugly the outfits are but you don’t know squat. You keep hating on the outfits you wish you could pull off but can’t. I’m a fashion designer so obviously I would know more than you.
Get better or stop writing. There are plenty of good k-news sites out there, one less is not going to kill anyone. In the words of Rain, “You should stick to your day job!”
April 28th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
popseoul, your voice is really pleasant to the ears! (and i think i caught your name when the lady coordinator thanked you at the end of the interview LOL!)
gosh Rain’s probably wondering, “WHAT’S PINKY? WHY PINKY?” when you listed down his nicknames. XD
April 28th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
DISSAPOINTING after all, not to Rain but POPSEOUL, a lame new nick name that has been given to rain by TIME 2 years ago??????? where’s the creativity???
and it’s funny how the girl made her execuse on her article of how she cant make it to ask hyolee-rain thing, ha…ha…ha… what a lame!!!
popseoul better to send someone who has more gut to carry on the sarcastic questions, then we might take you seriously!!!
it’s so lame
April 28th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
I somewhat (?) agree with FRANK but hey, I think Popseoul/interviewer was awesome!
Yay! Thanx for the insight on the interview and everything! Whoo!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
I just finished listening to the whole interview, I must admit I am disappointed becuz his standard is far from what I’ve expected, which explains why he flits back and forth (back into Korean). It’s evident he understands English way more than he can express.
I’m impressed tho
3:36 – whatever u expect, you’ll see more
2:54 – did u see Speed Racer?
2:59 – I think you’re gonna like it – sounds good here
He’s pronouncing his “r”s more clearly now.
What I didn’t like was how he recycled the words “ amazing “ and “ I’m so excited “ at about 4:10 – the same manner/tone as when he appeared on TRL with JYP years ago
Good attempt though, hopefully he is encouraged by this attempt
April 28th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
It seems to me like the popseoul! sisters are being way too harsh on Rain, since he actually TOLD you guys that he would prefer to speak in Korean, but the interviewer sort of forced him to converse in English. (And by the way, what kind of Korean interviewer prefers to speak in English when both the interviewer and the interviewee are KOREAN???) What a way to bash a star who agreed to an interview! I’m not a huge fan of Rain myself, but regardless, I still think he deserves SOME credit for his effort. And come on people, his English is not THAT bad for someone who wasn’t magically planted in the States in their younger years to naturally acquire a non-Korean accent. I’m a Korean American myself, and I know so many peeps from Korea who have been living here for ages, who sound even worse than Rain does on this interview.
So~ that being said, thanks to Popseoul! we get to hear Rain speaking English!!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
If he’s promoting the movie in the states then HE SHOULD GIVE INTERVIEWS IN ENGLISH unlike Se7en who chose to speak in Korean.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing him on The Colbert Report.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Hahahahaha, that sounds amusing! But Popseoul’s voice does sound nice hehe… But I don’t think she’s as cute as her voice…
Be nice if she could give us a photo hahahaha, but I bet she was drooling over interviewing Rain hahahaha
April 28th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
rain is looking like a such a woman, like lee hyori
April 28th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
if rain really wants to make it into hollywood, he needs to work on his english. it doesnt matter whether he has studied for five years or is going to continue studying for the rest of this life. but if he’s not able to articulate his feelings and thoughts out loud in english he won’t receive the respect he potentially deserves…
April 28th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
C’mon people! At least he tried.
Even if he still needs to practice and learn more English.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
loooooooooooool^^
April 28th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
And by the way Popseoul!, I really do love reading your comments, (and I say comments, b/c this is not a legitimate news cast), but it definitely seems like you yourselves need to improve on your English skills.
Perhaps you sisters were once ESL students as well?? And bashing Rain for his obviously lacking English makes you guys feel like you are all past that stage where you have to fidget and get nervous when someone asks you a question in English?? We hear you loud and clear on the interview segment, LOUD and CLEAR, and while your voice is really really pretty, you definitely need to hone your own English conversational skills too, cuz girl~ you don’t sound too native yourself.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
thanks popseoul for the interview
April 28th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
lol.. wud up Taejo !!! (read kpopped article)
this was soooo bad… and no i don’t understand him at all… if you’ve been learning a language for over 2 years a few hours a day, you should be able to do way better then this…. newayz, great great interviewing skills popseoul, you should have a show or something…
April 28th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Why are a lot of you hopping all over popseoul? Obviously she has to be courteous, what is wrong with you guys? Anyways, Rain is still a douche. A big congrats to popseoul it takes a lot to have to deal with that through an interview!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
why would Rain meet popseoul anyway? you’re too harsh, always bashing celebs, and most posts are hateful!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I really liked this interview, He is a sweet and humble guy and remember this is a phone interview SO it is hard to understand another language while being on the phone, and sometimes he wonderstood English and just answered in Hangul. I love Rain! AJa aJa Fighting!
POPSEOUL YOU GUYS ARE MEAN: Which nick would you like the best?? LOL! Pinky, ESL, Dancing Machine!! LOL HE DOESN´T HAVE A CLUE AS HOW MEAN YOU ARE! and he went and aswered in a cluless matter I WOULD PREFER MAGIC FEET!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
how can most of you be so ignorant? if it was some white person sayin all this sh*t about rain we would all be in an uproar about how racist these statements are (because of his english skills, or lack of) etc..
its sad that were ok with popseouls bashing because shes korean. its hard enough for asians to make it in the states without being stepped on by our own kind.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Come on, I think language barrier is not a problem. Popseoul blog team, please be polite on artists. Although you can write whatever you want, remember that many people are reading your blog.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Hahahahah! I agree with everyone, you’re voice is cute popseoul!
lol, i really enjoyed this inteview…Rain seems like he’s talking on the phone to his friend.
Hahahahah! when he said ‘Have you watched Speed Racer?’ wow he sounded sooooooo fluent…
And whatever to the people who said you were being fake cause you were so nice to him. What do you expect? Popseoul to start bashing him on the phone? -___- I doubt she would be so disrespectful to him on the phone.
Although I must say the interview and the article did seem a bit different, if Popseoul didn’t write it in this style, then it would be less interesting.
Popseoul, your reaction after he said “Magic Fit” was too funny. HAHAHAAH
April 28th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
i am so jelous… you had interview with rain?? sob sob sob
you lucky devil… btw i don’t like your new popseoul website.

whoa…his english is damn bad…
his answers are mostly in korean…
quite a disappointment…
April 28th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
he was pretty quick to answer in Korean…after he said that he was willing to answer all in english
KICK ASS KUNGFU ITS AMAZING (hahahahha good job on memorizing
good job POPSEOUL…that was a hard interview to conduct
April 28th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
As a Rain fan i have to say any english he speaks, even if it is bad or good, is still beautiful. It shows he’s trying but he may not be around enough english speakers. I have nothing bad to say about popseoul you have your opinion and i appreciate any information you present on the Korean entertaiment industry. I’ve just learned not to take it so seriously.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
i wanna see the female interviewer pic hahahah
April 28th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Imma big rain fan but his english is not so good…
but i wish him all the best
April 28th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
well we all must thank Rain for giving his time for us
his English not that bad for some one has been learning English for a short time.
love Rain we will support u ^^
